PHP ROOFTOP SUPPORTS - CASE STUDIES

Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Stiles Prison Unit, Case Study

Situation:

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s (TDCJ) prison, the Stiles Unit located in Beaumont, Texas, had serious problems with their roof and air systems. The project required replacing the old roofing system, removing old ductwork from the mezzanine, and supporting new ductwork on the roof. As a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita striking the area in 2005, the project required extra-strong roof mounting equipment. Texas Department of Criminal Justice Construction Management required the roof-mounted equipment be able to withstand 120 mph winds.

Solution:

The design and layout of the new systems were completed within 48 hours. The outsourced engineering took approximately seven days. PHP designed a roof and duct support system minimizing roofing penetrations. In addition, heavy-gauge cable restraints were implemented to secure the large amount of ductwork on Building 12. The standard five-year limited warranty applies to all installations.

Results:

TDCJ was able to save in excess of $100,000 since curbs or structural supports were not used. There were minimal roof penetrations and stamped drawings were provided to TDCJ by a licensed Texas P.E. The project, valued at $4 million, began in August 2007 and is still ongoing.
